How Do I Cancel My Current Plan Manager?

Author: Matt Clements

You can cancel your current NDIS plan management service and choose another plan manager during your existing NDIS plan.

You'll need to check your service agreement, give any required notice and make sure the NDIA records the change to your plan manager.

Ending your service agreement doesn't automatically mean the NDIA has updated your plan manager relationship.

You don't need to wait until your NDIS plan ends.

Here's how to cancel your current plan manager without unnecessary confusion or payment delays.

Step 1: Check your service agreement

Start by finding the service agreement you have with your current plan manager.

Look for:

  • How much notice you need to give.
  • Whether cancellation must be in writing.
  • How to contact your plan manager.
  • What happens to outstanding invoices.
  • Any responsibilities you have when the agreement ends.

There is no universal 28-day cancellation notice period for participants. Your notice requirements depend on your service agreement.

If you're unsure about the notice period, ask your current plan manager to point you to the relevant section of your agreement.

The NDIS guidance on plan management explains how changing plan managers works.

Step 2: Tell your current plan manager you're leaving

Contact your current plan manager and explain that you want to end your service agreement.

It's a good idea to do this in writing so you have a record.

You can keep your message simple:

"Hi, I'd like to end my NDIS plan management service agreement.

Please confirm my required notice period, the date my service will end and the steps needed to hand over any outstanding invoices.

Thank you."

You don't need to provide a detailed explanation of why you're leaving.

Step 3: Confirm your cancellation date

Ask your current plan manager to confirm the date your service agreement will end.

This helps you arrange when your new plan manager can take over.

Check that both plan managers understand the intended changeover date.

Ask when your current plan manager will stop managing new invoices and when your new plan manager can begin.

Your plan managers should also check the status of claims already submitted, so invoices aren't accidentally claimed twice.

Step 4: Arrange the handover of outstanding invoices

Before your current plan manager finishes, ask them for information about:

  • Unpaid provider invoices.
  • Claims submitted but not yet finalised.
  • Payments already completed.
  • Any disputed or rejected invoices.
  • Your remaining funding and spending records.

Your previous plan manager should forward outstanding invoices to your new plan manager for processing.

Your new plan manager can then review eligible invoices once the correct arrangements are in place.

Claims already submitted or paid should be checked to avoid duplicates.

You don't necessarily need to wait for every outstanding invoice to be paid before changing plan managers.

Step 5: Tell the NDIA you're changing plan managers

You need to let the NDIA know when you change or remove your plan manager.

You can do this by:

  • Speaking with your my NDIS contact.
  • Calling the NDIA on 1800 800 110.
  • Submitting an enquiry through the NDIS contact page.

The process depends on which NDIS system your plan uses.

If you're using the newer my NDIS system

Your new plan manager needs to be recorded as a "my provider" so they can submit eligible claims.

You can arrange this through the my NDIS participant portal or with help from the NDIA. Your new plan manager may also send you a relationship request to accept.

If you're using the older myplace system

Your existing plan manager may need to end the relevant service booking arrangements before your new plan manager can take over.

Ask the NDIA or your plan managers to confirm which steps apply to your plan.

Important: Ending your service agreement and updating your plan manager relationship with the NDIA are separate steps. Make sure both are completed.

Step 6: Confirm your new plan manager is ready

Before the changeover is complete, check that your new plan manager:

  • Has the information needed to manage your funding.
  • Knows about any outstanding invoices.
  • Can access the correct plan management arrangements.
  • Has explained where your providers should send future invoices.
  • Has told you how to check your budget and spending.
  • Has confirmed when they can begin submitting eligible claims on your behalf.

A clear handover helps avoid confusion about who is responsible for your invoices and payments.

Can I cancel if I haven't chosen a new plan manager?

You can tell your current plan manager that you want to end your agreement before choosing a replacement.

However, if you still want your NDIS funding to be plan-managed, it's usually better to arrange a new plan manager before your existing service ends.

This can help reduce interruptions to invoice processing and provider payments.

Your NDIS plan and approved funding don't automatically end when you cancel your plan management agreement.

What if my plan manager won't let me cancel?

You have the right to choose your NDIS plan manager.

If your current provider won't confirm your cancellation or is making the process difficult, ask for an explanation in writing.

You can contact the NDIA for help with your plan management arrangements.

If you're concerned about a provider's conduct, you can also make a complaint to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

Ready to make the change?

Cancelling your current plan manager doesn't have to be complicated.

The most important things are to understand your notice requirements, confirm your end date and make sure your new plan manager is ready to take over.
