Do I Need to Tell the NDIS When Changing Plan Managers?

Author: Matt Clements

Yes. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) needs to know when you change plan managers so the correct provider can be recorded.

You can contact the NDIA yourself, or your new plan manager may help start the change through the provider portal.

You'll also need to tell your current plan manager before switching.

The NDIS guidance on changing plan managers explains the notification requirements.

How do I tell the NDIS I'm changing plan managers?

You can contact the NDIA by:

  • Calling: 1800 800 110.
  • Speaking to your “my NDIS” contact: Ask them to help update your plan manager.
  • Submitting an enquiry: Use the NDIS service hub.

If your new plan manager sends a relationship request through the “my NDIS” provider portal, you can review and accept it through your participant portal (through the NDIS linked service in MYGOV).

Your new plan manager can explain which arrangements need to be updated.

What happens if I'm using the my NDIS system (PACE)?

If your plan is in the newer my NDIS system (PACE), your new plan manager needs to be recorded in the plan manager role, which also establishes the relevant “my provider” relationship.

Your new plan manager can send a relationship request through the provider portal. You can then review and accept or decline that request in your “my NDIS” participant portal.

Think of it like updating an authorised contact on an account. The correct relationship needs to be recorded before your new plan manager can manage claims.

Recording a provider relationship and choosing what information to share are related, but they are not exactly the same thing.

You can review the information shared with your providers in the relationships section of your “my NDIS “participant portal.

Your plan manager can access certain plan and budget information through its recorded role. You can also review applicable consent settings.

What if my plan is still in “myplace”?

If your plan is still managed through the older “myplace” system (sometimes referred to as PRODA), the changeover involves service booking arrangements rather than the newer “my provider” system.

Your existing plan management service booking may need to be ended so a new booking can be created for your chosen plan manager.

Ask both plan managers to confirm who will update the bookings.

The NDIS guidance for connecting plan managers explains the different systems.

Can my new plan manager notify the NDIS for me?

Your new plan manager can help you understand the process and may be able to initiate a provider relationship request.

However, you or your authorised representative may still need to approve the relationship or contact the NDIA.

Signing a service agreement with a new plan manager does not, by itself, confirm that the NDIA's records have been updated.

Ask your new plan manager to confirm when the correct arrangements are in place.

Do I need a new NDIS plan to change managers?

No. If your funding is already plan-managed, you can change your plan manager during your existing plan.

Changing who manages your funding is different from asking the NDIA to change how your funding is managed.

For example, moving from self-managed funding to plan-managed funding may require the NDIA to update your funding management arrangements.

What should I check before my new plan manager starts?

Make sure:

  • You've told your current plan manager you're leaving.
  • You've checked any notice requirements in your service agreement.
  • The correct plan manager arrangements have been recorded with the NDIA.
  • Your new plan manager has confirmed when they can begin.
  • You know where your providers should send future invoices.
