How to Change NDIS Plan Managers
Author: Matt Clements
Thinking about changing your NDIS plan manager?
You can choose a different plan manager during your NDIS plan. You don't have to wait until your plan ends.
Whether you want clearer communication, better budget information or a service that suits your needs, here's how switching works.
Can I change my NDIS plan manager?
Yes. The NDIS allows you to change plan managers at any time during your plan. Your plan manager helps you manage your plan-managed funding, pay provider invoices and keep track of your budget.
Changing plan managers is a bit like handing over a folder. Your NDIS funding stays in your plan, but the information and unpaid invoices need to reach the right organisation.
The NDIS guide to plan-managed funding explains your options.
How to switch NDIS plan managers
There are five main steps.
Step 1: Choose your new plan manager
Find a registered NDIS plan manager that suits your needs.
Before choosing, ask:
- How do you process invoices?
- How can I check my NDIS budget?
- How will you keep me updated?
- What help will I receive when joining?
- How do you handle outstanding invoices when someone switches?
The NDIS explains what to consider when using plan-managed funding.
Step 2: Check your current service agreement
Your service agreement explains how your current plan manager provides services and how the agreement can end. Check whether you need to give notice and whether any invoices or other matters need attention.
Notice periods depend on your agreement and applicable requirements. There isn't one notice period that applies to every participant switching plan managers.
You can read the NDIS guidance on changing providers and checking service agreements.
Step 3: Tell your current plan manager
Let your current plan manager know you've decided to change. Ask them to help with the handover, including your remaining budget information and any outstanding invoices.
You can also tell your support coordinator, if you have one.
The NDIS explains how to change plan managers.
Step 4: Arrange the change with the NDIS
The NDIS needs to record your new plan manager so they can manage claims for you.
How this works depends on whether your plan is in the newer my NDIS system (PACE) or the older “myplace” (sometimes referred to as PRODA) system.
For newer NDIS plans (PACE):
Your new plan manager needs to be recorded as your provider. This is referred to as the endorsement.
You can arrange this through the my NDIS participant portal or by contacting the NDIA. Your new plan manager may also send a relationship request for you to accept.
The NDIS explains how my provider relationships work.
For older NDIS plans (myplace):
The change may involve ending your current plan manager's service bookings and setting up the correct bookings for your new plan manager. Your current and new plan managers can help explain the handover steps.

If you need help, contact your “my NDIS” contact or call the NDIS on 1800 800 110.
Step 5: Confirm your new plan manager is ready
Before sending new invoices, check that the correct plan manager relationship or service bookings are in place. Ask your new plan manager to confirm when they can begin processing invoices.
Let your support providers know where to send future invoices.
The NDIS explains how plan managers connect with participants.
What happens to my NDIS funding when I switch?
Your existing NDIS funding doesn't automatically disappear or restart when you change plan managers. Your current plan, budgets and funding periods continue to apply.
Changing your plan manager is different from asking the NDIA to change how your funding is managed.
You can read more about how plan-managed funding works.
What happens to unpaid invoices?
Your old and new plan managers should work together to arrange the handover of outstanding invoices.
The NDIA says the previous plan manager should forward unpaid invoices to the new plan manager for processing. Claims submitted by the previous plan manager after the relationship changes may be rejected.
For older “myplace” plans, service booking arrangements also need to be checked.
Think of it like changing the address where your bills are sent. The invoices still need attention, but they must reach the organisation responsible for processing them.
You can read the official NDIS guidance on how plan managers should handle a changeover.
Will switching affect my support workers?
Changing plan managers doesn't automatically mean changing your support workers, therapists or other providers. You can generally keep using your chosen providers, subject to your funding and existing service arrangements.
Let them know when your new plan manager is ready to receive invoices.
The NDIS explains that participants with plan-managed funding can choose registered or unregistered providers.
Why do people change NDIS plan managers?
People change for different reasons. You might want clearer updates about your budget, easier access to invoice information, better communication or more help understanding your funding.
The right plan manager should help you feel informed and confident about managing your NDIS plan.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change plan managers halfway through my NDIS plan?
Yes. You can change plan managers during your plan. Check your service agreement and arrange the change with the NDIA.
The NDIS plan management guide explains this.
Do I need a new NDIS plan to switch?
Generally, no. If your funding is already plan-managed, changing from one plan manager to another doesn't usually require a new NDIS plan.
However, asking to change how your funding is managed is a different process.
Read more about plan-managed funding.
What if my NDIS funding is agency-managed or self-managed?
You can ask the NDIA to change how your funding is managed. If your funding is agency-managed (NDIA-managed), the NDIA pays your providers.
If you're self-managed, you or your representative manage payments and records.
To use a plan manager, the relevant funding needs to be plan-managed, with funding for plan management included in your plan.
You can ask the NDIA about changing your funding management arrangements at any time. The NDIA will consider your request and explain whether a change to your plan is needed.
Your plan can also contain a mix of self-managed, agency-managed and plan-managed funding. This is different from simply switching between two plan managers.
The NDIS explains how to request plan-managed funding.
What if my NDIS plan is on PRODA instead of PACE?
People sometimes use PRODA to describe the older NDIS system.
The older participant and provider portal system is called “myplace”, while the newer system is commonly known as PACE or “my NDIS”.
PRODA was a government identity and access system used by providers, rather than the name of an NDIS plan system. You can still change plan managers if your plan is in the older “myplace” system.
The main difference is how the change is recorded.
For older myplace plans, the handover may involve ending existing plan management service bookings and creating the correct new bookings.
For newer PACE plans, your new plan manager needs to be recorded in the “my NDIS “system. This is often referred to as “endorsing your new plan manager”.
Your plan manager can help you understand which process applies.
Read the NDIS information about the myplace provider portal and connecting with participants through the different portals.
Who handles unpaid invoices when I switch?
Your current and new plan managers should coordinate the handover. The NDIA says outstanding invoices should be passed to the new plan manager for processing after the change.
For older “myplace” plans, service bookings and any funding allocated to existing bookings also need to be considered.
See the NDIS guidance for plan managers.
Can my support coordinator help me switch?
Yes. Your support coordinator can help you understand your options, compare plan managers and communicate with the organisations involved.
You can also contact the NDIA directly to arrange the change.
How long does it take to change plan managers?
The timeframe depends on your existing service agreement, the handover and the NDIA's processes. Ask your current and new plan managers what needs to happen before the change takes effect.
For more information, read the NDIS guide to changing providers.
