The Unexpected Path to Kismet: Mark Woodland's Story

Our co-founder and CEO, Mark Woodland, recently sat down with ABC Conversations to talk about the winding road that led him to founding Kismet. It's not the kind of story you'd expect from a tech CEO, and that's exactly why we wanted to share it.

Mark grew up in Ipswich, Queensland, raised by his single mum after years of moving around as a family. He was a playful, enthusiastic kid, but school was never top of mind. By the time he graduated, Mark was more interested in driving around with his mates, music up and windows down, than in mapping out a career.

Everything changed when his younger brother Ben, who had just joined the Army, was killed in a car accident. Ben was only 18.

Mark made a decision in the wake of that loss: he would carry his brother's wish forward himself. He enlisted in the Army and served for ten years. A tribute to Ben that shaped the next decade of his life.

When Mark eventually left the Army, he came home to help his mum run her childcare business, which was still buried in paper-based admin. Rather than just pitching in, Mark rebuilt it. Moving the business from paper into a digital system, and in doing so, discovering a knack for building things that make people's working lives easier.

That instinct is what eventually led him to found Kismet, where he serves as CEO today.

It's a reminder that the most meaningful businesses often come from the most personal places, and that the people building healthcare technology are shaped by stories far outside the industry itself.
